Dear readers, there is some deeply sad news to report this month. Tricia Devereaux, fresh off her six month hiatus from porn, has tested positive for the HIV virus. While speculation is high about just how Ms. Devereaux may have been infected, no solid facts are available at this time.
Many of porn's busiest males have been under quarantine since the announcement, but as of yet, no other cases have been reported. Her long time boyfriend Rob Black has reportedly tested negative, as have all the men and women who have worked with Tricia in the last year.
Tricia has stated that she will be leaving Los Angeles at the end of this month to live with her family and begin the difficult task of fighting this terrible disease. I have always considered myself a fan and an admirer of Tricia's and I wish her all the best. Among the stranger side notes to this story are the rumors flying around that Tricia in some way blames Jay Ashley for her infection.
No word whether this means she thinks she was infected by Jay, or if it points to a possible non sexual source of infection.
On a less tragic note, big news this month from the Elegant Angel camp.
Fresh off their impressive 1997, the Elegant Empire has split. Shortly after CES, Greg Alves, who has been credited with bringing much of the directing talent into the company in recent months, left, apparently in a bit of a huff. Two weeks ago, Mike South, fresh off this second consecutive 'Best Pro-Am Series' award, walked amidst reports that Patrick Collins wanted to re-negotiate his contract.
(Reportedly a deal made by Alves without the consent of Collins.) Finally, earlier this week, Elegant's golden boy, Rob Black took his Best Director award and along with Tom Byron, Tiffany Mynx and Van Damage, left Elegant to form their own company, Extreme Productions. With four of their top directors, and their top contract girl leaving the fold, the Elegant team would seem to be severely weakened, but Collins already has plans to once again rebuild his company around existing directors, Marc Wallace, Nicky Starks and of course, his own highly successful "Sodomania" series.
Additionally, speculation is high about a possible list of replacements for the departed quartet. Peter North and Santino Lee apparently head the unconfirmed list of possibilities. Anyone else feel like dusting off the old resume?
Rumors that Lisa Ann is back in the adult biz are partially true.
She has returned to SoCal and has once again started feature dancing. However, reports that she was back in front of the camera were premature. As of now, Lisa Ann is not back in films, and says she has no plans to ever do movies again.
In other comeback news, Alicia Rio has resurfaced after some time learning the ins and out of our penal system. Reports of her demise were apparently premature, and Alicia says that dancing and possibly even film work is in her immediate future.
The biggest comeback new of 1997 is now officially a closed book. Tori Welles first planned a big budget comeback for ex-husband Paul Norman, then signed a contract with Vivid only to bail on them before ever shooting. After the controversial release of "The Private Diaries of Tori Welles", there had been talk that Tori would, in fact be back full time. Well, that now seems to have changed permanently. Tori has stated that she is done and will not be back. As before, you will be missed.
Another of my personal favorites who has been talking retirement is Brooke Ashley. Word is, Brooke is taking pretty much all the work she can get at the moment in a final flurry before she packs it up and heads back to New York to dance full time. Say it ain't so Brooke.
In perhaps the most bizarre story of the month, Alyssa Love has vanished. After seeing her in Vegas at CES, I have been unable to reach Alyssa to send her a copy of our interview. Apparently no one else can reach her either and rumors have been flying around like mad. Some of the more outrageous rumors had Alyssa mixed up in the Tricia/Jay Ashley/HIV story, some even going so far as to report that she may have killed herself.
My sources tell me that this is 100% false. That Alyssa did not test positive and is, in fact, quite alive, and living back in Texas with her family. Now, rumors about her splitting town with a large sum of money belonging to her boyfriend may have more truth to them. Either way, I hope Alyssa gets her act together and returns to porn ASAP.
Another interesting story has surfaced about one time porn 'star' John Wayne Bobbitt. The man who has become synonymous with painful dismemberment, is now working as a bartender in a Nevada brothel. Is it my imagination or didn't Bobbitt bail on porn to become a minister or something?
I've heard of preaching to the sinners John, but come on. And hey, don't you think five years of fame for having your unit cut off is abuse of your fifteen minutes? And am I the only one who misses Amy Fisher?
Finally, the Fans of X Rated Entertainment had their annual awards show this month.
Once again, the lovely Myan theater in downtown LA was crawling with porn stars and liquored up fans gawking at all the desirable flesh. After nearly being ostracized by the organization for my criticisms last year, I am happy to report that this was one of the best FOXE shows yet. They seriously reduced the number of people allowed in, which actually made it possible to walk around, and believe it or not, see the stage.
The sound still sucks at the Myan, and the show was nearly an hour late, but hey, we can't have everything. Taking home the awards for female fan favorite were Stephanie Swift, Tiffany Mynx, Jenna Jameson and Stacey Valentine. The male faves were a repeat of last year, Sean Michaels and T.T Boy, while Johnni Black took home her 'Vixen' award as best newcomer.
Until next month dear readers, keep watching...
