Robert Madison No problem.

Roger T. Pipe List off some of the movies you done so people can familiarize themselves with your work.

Robert Madison The first movie I did was SMUT 16. I did a scene in one of Patrick's movies Idiot's Guide to Making Porno Movies, then I did Tails of Perversity 7, Cellar Dweller 3 and I just finished shooting SMUT 17, and Tails of Perversity 8 and am getting ready to shoot The Cellar Dweller 4.

Roger T. Pipe We'll hit on those individually later, but let's backtrack a little. Where did you grow up?

Robert Madison I grew up in Indiana.

Roger T. Pipe How did you wind up out here?

Robert Madison That's a good question. I always wanted to live out here. I was playing music and wanted a career in music.

Roger T. Pipe What did you play?

Robert Madison I play guitar, bass guitar, piano, and I sing. I am a songwriter, also. I compose and perform all the music to my movies, now. The plan was for me to come to LA for a career in music, but I went to college instead. I went to Indiana University and studied audio technology. That way I could learn the recording business. I recorded an album with nine songs and my brother and I put it out. We started our own record company and tried to get it air play on the radio. We figured, if it was getting played, it would be a shoe in for us. We were working out of a one bedroom apartment, but we made it sound like a big company. We put together this big press package so people couldn't help but notice it. The envelopes were huge with my picture on the front. I had long hair and all. Basically, we went broke. In the meantime, I got married and had a baby on the way. At this point, I had to make money so I got a job at a video store. We had a porn section of course, so I got to see some of what this business had to offer.

Roger T. Pipe Why do all great people seem to work in video stores at one time or another?

Robert Madison The gateway to greatness I guess. I needed to make more money, so I went to a temp agency. They got me on with a church, at their national headquarters. It was in the publishing department. I fit in really well and got the chance to learn computer graphics. I was working with the graphics department so I was able to teach myself graphic design. I was designing church curriculum books, Sunday school materials and what not. I did that for a few years then started to do freelance work. I did a national project for Toys R Us. I also had a talk radio show at that time. I was wearing many hats in those days. I had always been a fan of Sharon Mitchell, so I emailed her to be on the show. Months later, December of 98, I got a call out of the blue from Sharon. She said she wanted to do the show and I was totally excited. We set it up for January. By this time, I've got two kids and my wife at the time, we're divorced now, and I decided it was time to move to California. We got the plane tickets and stayed with friends for two weeks while I looked for a job. In the meantime, I had Sharon on the show and got to talk to her. I told her I was coming out and would be looking for a job. She told me she couldn't really refer me to anyone until she met me, so I was pretty excited. I came out here, sent resumes out, brought Sharon a tape of the show. I did eight interviews in two days before meeting Mitch. When I met her, she referred me to Patrick Collins. I had heard of him, so I faxed a resume over. The next morning, Dion called me and told me they wanted to start an in house art department. He told me that if I could do what I said I could do, he would buy me whatever equipment I needed and get it started. I got a speeding ticket on the way down here, I was that excited. I did a sample box for Patrick and he hired me on the spot.

Roger T. Pipe So you started out in the art department, not as a director?

Robert Madison It was a few months before I started bugging Dion to let me shoot a scene. Finally, in December of last year, he got sick of me bugging him and set it up. I shot a three girl scene with Jill Kelly, Amanda Rain and Daisy Chain. I showed Dion the footage, he loved it and wanted me to shoot 4 other scenes and make it S.M.U.T. 16.

Roger T. Pipe You are no longer doing the graphic design work, right?

Robert Madison Only for my own movies. I'm busy directing now. I'm doing a movie a month.

Roger T. Pipe If you could go back three years, is this something that you could even have guessed you would be doing? Is it even something you wanted to do then?

Robert Madison One of the reasons I wanted to come to Los Angeles was to make movies, not porn, but the mainstream movie business. I would still like to do that, but I'm a fan of porn, so this is great. I'm really enjoying myself.

Roger T. Pipe Which do you think was the most challenging movie so far?

Robert Madison I would say Cellar Dweller 3. (AVN just gave it a spotlight pick and a pre-nomination for BEST SEX COMEDY.)

Roger T. Pipe How come?

Robert Madison I knew a lot of people would be wondering what I was going to do with it.

Roger T. Pipe There is a history there.

Robert Madison Exactly. It was hard to pull it off, changing the feel and making it my own without losing the original idea.

Roger T. Pipe It definitely has a different tone than the others.

Robert Madison Right.

Roger T. Pipe It's not as mean spirited or pushing the envelope. Is that something you had in mind?

Robert Madison No, it was just what I wanted to bring to the screen. I'm not a mean spirited guy, so the movie reflects that. I'm a pervert and there is some stuff in SMUT 17 that will push a little.

Roger T. Pipe Like what?

Robert Madison I've got Sky doing a masturbation scene around the five vignettes in the movie. She'll start out slow and sexy then get hotter as she goes. In the final sequence, she's masturbating in the sink with the water running, soapy water pouring over the edges and she's masturbating with a butcher knife.

Roger T. Pipe I guess that's not mean spirited as long as it's with the handle end of the knife.
Robert Madison It's with the blade actually, the dull edge, but it's great. I had her tied to the bed with a belt around her neck masturbating.

Roger T. Pipe When you're doing a movie like SMUT with the vignettes, do you have certain performers in mind for each scene? Do you look for a type, or specific star?

Robert Madison For the most part, I find the girls I want to use then make the story around them. That's how it usually works. I like to meet the girls, get a feel for their personality and then use that to make the scenes hotter.

Roger T. Pipe Which means they can be more comfortable.

Robert Madison Exactly, and it becomes more natural. We're not generally dealing with great actresses. There are some certainly, but keeping it natural really helps the sexuality come through.

Roger T. Pipe What is your basic philosophy on what makes for a good scene?

Robert Madison I think it's easy for a scene to get boring because it's just two people fucking and we've seen that a thousand times. I like the sex to get rough. I would say that for the general public, in their private lives, there probably is not a ton of rough sex. Most people have a boring sex life so if they're going to watch something, it should be something more intense than what they get at home.

Roger T. Pipe So high energy performers are the key?

Robert Madison That's a big part of it. I also like to do things differently. I know you personally don't like the peeing thing, and I'm not saying peeing on someone, but just girls peeing in the toilet makes it interesting.

Roger T. Pipe That's just a personal thing. Watching a girl pee, on someone or in a toilet has as much sex appeal as watching a banana rot.

Robert Madison In the latest movie, I have girls peeing as part of the plot. I don't know maybe you'll like it. To me, it's a private thing.

Roger T. Pipe Do you think that's the appeal?

Robert Madison I think it's the idea that you're doing something that you aren't supposed to see. It can be sexy I think. I'm not into the whole shitting thing, that's just too much, but I was thinking today, if the girl was hot enough, that might even be sexy.

Roger T. Pipe That would have to be a pretty hot girl.

Robert Madison You're right.

Roger T. Pipe Are there any subjects that you just won't go near?

Robert Madison I won't go for pure shock.

Roger T. Pipe What about incest?

Robert Madison I probably wouldn't do anything on that theme. I have two kids and that just wouldn't work for me. I'm really an oxymoron. I'm a super-dad pornographer. It's a weird life.

Roger T. Pipe Is that a hard balance, or do you just walk out the door of this place and turn off the porn part?

Robert Madison Totally. A lot of people are confused that I can do that, but it's two separate things. Most of my friends can't believe it.

Roger T. Pipe You don't look like most porn directors.

Robert Madison (He laughs) Is that a good thing?

Roger T. Pipe Sure. You're good looking, with a smile on your face. I'm a little confused. You're supposed to be scowling, spitting and swearing like a sailor.

Robert Madison Would you like me to spit?

Roger T. Pipe That's all right. Do you still have time to watch other people's movies?

Robert Madison I rarely have time any more.

Roger T. Pipe Is there anyone who you think makes really great movies?

Robert Madison Honestly, I don't really watch a lot of other people's stuff. Working at Elegant, I have seen a lot of Patrick Collins' movies. It may sound like I am kissing butt, but honestly, I enjoy Pat's stuff. Patrick genuinely loves sex. This guy is a real pervert. I think that really comes across. He never gets tired of sex and porn. There are so many jaded people in this biz who make porn, and don't even enjoy the sex anymore. Patrick acts like a teenager who is watching 2 people have sex for the first time. That's how I feel, too. If the director isn't excited- than how can the viewer be? What a great fucking job. Telling people what to do during sex. And working with beautiful women. I will never get tired of that! Another thing about Pat is that I love is that he doesn't have a formula like a lot of directors. He might be there for hours, just making stuff up as he goes along! A lot of directors just come in and say, OK let's get mish, reverse cowgirl, doggie, anal, and pop, and let's get out of here. To me that is boring. I like to throw the paint on the canvas and see what the hell we can come up with.

Roger T. Pipe Anyone else?

Robert Madison I really try to live in my own world and ignore everyone else. That way it comes from within. If I watch a lot of other stuff, I might be influenced and I don't want that.

Roger T. Pipe Are you going to stay behind the camera, or are we going to see more of you than we did in Cellar Dweller 3?

Robert Madison No comment. Let's just say that it was never the plan.

Roger T. Pipe If you could pick a single scene in any movie you've shot so far to show someone, what would it be?

Robert Madison I would have to pick something from the new SMUT movie. Yeah anything from that movie, or from there are 2 scenes in Tails of Perversity 8 that stand out. A scene with Brianna Banks, Justine Romee and Joel Lawrence. And a scene with Taylor St Claire, Billy Glide and Dillan Day.

Roger T. Pipe Have you had any bad experiences on a set?

Robert Madison Once there was a girl who basically said she would work with anybody. She named a few names, including a black male performer. So I booked a white guy and a black guy to work with her. When she showed up to the location, the black guy was not there yet, and I had to run to the store to get some flowers for the scene. Anyway, when I left the grocery store, my car wouldn't start. The alarm was messed up and it wouldn't allow me to start the car. Of course, it was hot as hell and the stupid alarm kept going off. Anyway, after a dozen calls on my cell phone, and about an hour later I finally found someone who knew how to bypass the alarm. By now, everyone had been waiting around forever. When I finally got back to the location, the black guy was there along with everyone else. So, the girl wanted to talk to me in private. She said that she wouldn't work with the black performer. The whole thing really sucked! Needless to say, he wasn't happy and neither was I.

Roger T. Pipe Who was the girl?

Robert Madison I'm not going to go into that.

Roger T. Pipe Did she give a reason?

Robert Madison No comment. Oh here's a good story. I was shooting the opening scene to The Cellar Dweller 3. It was a scene where, me, William H. Nutsack, and David Luger were cavemen. David was to be blown in a cave by Zarina. So we all went to this park in Simi Valley, where there were some caves. Bill had gone over a few days before, because a friend of his showed him the way to get to the cave. It was a hundred fucking degrees, and all of us were carrying costumes, equipment, etc. So we are walking and walking and finally I sense that Bill is lost. He can't remember where to go. So we stop in the shade and he goes off down this trail to see if he can find it. 45 minutes later, he is still gone! So I went looking for Bill and returned 10 minutes later. Couldn't find him. So I decide to go ahead and shoot the BJ scene. We walk down the trail a little bit, and the big rocks in the background look like they could be outside a cave. So we shot it there. While we were shooting, in the distance I barely made out "Robert" It was Bill. I stopped shooting and ran down the trail. Bill was wobbling up the trail and looked like he was about to pass out. All he could say is "Water" So I ran to our bags and got him a bottle of water. He was all red and looked like he was about to have a heat stoke. Then he told us that he had been chased by 2 coyotes! So after the BJ was done, we had to go shoot the opening dialogue. We found a sign for the cave and I went to find it. It was way up on the top of this mountain. I hadn't eaten all day and I was starting to get weak. It was really steep! So anyway, Zarina stayed down at the bottom of the mountain. We all got into our loin cloths, which were used in the movie Amistad, and then we pictured how it would look if anyone came up there. 3 guys dressed as cavemen with a video camera!

Roger T. Pipe I hear you just got pre-nomed for Best Sex Comedy. . .

Robert Madison I think that's fucking great, and hope to actually be nominated! It really is a funny movie. When I shot the game show sequence for Who Wants to Fuck a Million Hares, the whole cast was laughing uncontrollably. Daisy Chain told me a few weeks ago, that it was the hardest she had ever laughed in her life. I was Wink Cottontail, and Bill was Jack Me Rabbit. A few weeks before I shot the movie, I was in a costume shop. They had a rack of old costumes outside, and I went to check it out. They had a few old bunny costumes. I went in to inquire how much they were. They said 35 bucks each they were getting rid of them because they looked like evil bunnies and no one wanted an evil easter bunny. I said perfect, I'll take two! I knew immediately that it would be me and Bill, and when we first got into the costumes, it was magic. We instantly go into character. Of course, I got Scotty Schwartz to play the bunnies' agent. And he was hilarious. And then I was Lizard Man. We had so much fun making it, but it was crazy how much work I put into that movie. When you work so hard on something, you really appreciate it when someone actually praises your work. The bunnies are becoming really popular. We appeared on Collin's Sleazy Friends show as the bunnies and cracked everyone up. We had a contest to see how many carrots we could stick in everyone's mouths! I have heard from so many people that they show the bunny parts of the movie to all their friends when they come over. The bunnies are becoming cult classics.

Roger T. Pipe Anything we didn't cover?

Robert Madison I think we got it all. Thanks man.

Roger T. Pipe Thanks Robert.
